CLEAR LIGHT ASTROLOGY

The Pain and Gain of Pluto.

In Roman mythology Pluto was the God of the underworld (in Greek mythology, Hades is the equivalent). The underworld is not synonymous with hell, but the afterlife as a whole.

In Astrology, Pluto pertains to our obsessions, suppressed anger, sex (along with the Moon, Venus, and Mars) and the things that lurk beneath us. It is the outer most planet, which indicates it having a long orbit around the sun (approximately 248 years), thus it is a generational planet. If it is aspecting a personal point in our chart, we can naturally feel like the world is shaking when we feel a shift in emotions. I myself have Moon opposition Pluto (conjunct the MC), so the degree in which I feel grief or even joy is earth shattering. This is because Pluto is about extremes - there is no middle ground with it.

Everyone will go through a Plutonian transit in their life, and those with strong Pluto placements will tend to handle it a bit better, as they are used to feeling such depths in their everyday life. This is not to say they won't be affected by it as much.

A Pluto transit consists of those extreme life changing situations - the death of a loved one, resentment, guilt, abuse, violence - anything that is extreme. What Pluto is trying to teach us is to adapt to such an extreme change in life, and to take on board the challenge and what message it is wanting us to view so that we can adapt and continue to grow into a stronger sense of self. The symbol for Pluto is on the left. It means spirit, eternal life on top of receptivity, which is being kept grounded by matter. Pluto will enforce change on us so that we can end an old cycle in order to start anew, and rise from the ashes like the phoenix does. If we work along with Pluto's extreme workings, we will reap the rewards; spiritual heights and depths, progress to a stronger self. Just like Chiron, Pluto asks us to heal those parts of that are wounded, but the things that are not needed anymore as opposed to latching on tightly. It is in our Nature to want things to remain the same, but remaining the same brings stagnation, and then you end up in the past instead of moving forward with Life.

Pluto rules Scorpio and the 8th house. It deals with matters such as sex, death, power, taxes and other people's possessions. Power is a huge Plutonian issue because that is the very thing that Pluto is trying to take away from us, which paradoxically it is wanting us to gain for ourselves. This is why a Pluto transit, or people who are Plutonian (Pluto making aspects to the luminaries, ASC, MC, or to several planets, or multiple planets in Scorpio), have issues dealing with power. Nobody likes feeling powerless in a situation. This is what makes us cave in to ourselves, and we feel bare. This is us shedding our skin to make room for growth. Finding a way to overcome this in a pragmatic, healing manner will ultimately manifest into a new cycle of power. After all, everything is just a cycle. It is better to flow with Life and Nature rather than against.

Digging deep into our psychological confrontations will allow us to let go of this pain. Pluto/Scorpio/8th house pertains to other people's resources as well as the past, so when we can confront this deep seated pain, we are choosing to live life in the present. We are no longer choosing to self sabotage. We use our past pain to get out of the responsibilities of the present, which is another way of saying self victimizing. When we can come to grips of letting go of the valuable assets, our pain, and are willing to live in the present, this is when we master the Pluto pain.
The power that Pluto gives us can be used for us or against us. Whilst Neptune pain can be grown out of through clarity, Pluto needs to have the lights turned on, to face these confronting issues.

Pluto is our cellular stuff - our cellular memory. It is also the existential guilt that we are given innately, things that are passed down in a cellular manner. Whilst we are bringing up these mental and emotional issues, we need to balance this out with a third movement - the physical. Working with somatic therapies in conjunction with psycho-dynamic therapies aids in this.  Massages, flexibility training, gym, walks, any kind of body work will help dispel this Pluto darkness.
