I've read in multiple books that regard the traditional rulers, or co-rulers of the signs as obsolete. This got me thinking - it has only been in relatively recent times that the discovery of the modern rulers (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) have suited more to ruling Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio, but the original rulers were still important as the themes of which they pertained to are similar to the new ones. So why would they be obsolete? They have worked for thousands of years by the original astrologers, so to disregard them would be a disrespect to the craft.
Let us take a look at the original rulers:
- Before Uranus was discovered and made the modern ruler of Aquarius, Saturn was the traditional ruler. Saturn pertains to tradition, structure, restriction, hard work, maturing and delay.
Whilst these themes coincide with Capricorn, the sign which Saturn has always ruled, these can still be applied to Aquarius along with the themes of Uranus (breaking free, originality, shock and surprise).
We see that Capricorn is tradition and Aquarius is the rebel. Saturn gives the rebel Aquarius structure to break free of the societal chains, and to reform more of an equality for the betterment of humanity. Whilst Uranus does suit being the modern ruler of Aquarius as the traits gel together more, Saturn still aids in this process, but it is just from a different stance.
- Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces, and the traditional ruler was Jupiter. Jupiter pertains to expansion, our morals and ethics, optimism, and exaggeration. These themes coincide with Sagittarius, the sign ruled by Jupiter, and these are still somewhat connected to the Nature of Pisces.
Pisces wants to be a service to others on a universal scale (something which would require expanding), and wants to keep the peace - they don't want to any harm to come to anyone. Neptune suits being the ruler of Pisces now as the modern ruler, as the themes suits better - the illusion and delusion, rose-coloured glasses, universal spiritualism. Jupiter still works as a co-ruler of Pisces, as this pertains to expanding out the mind in order to explore a high sense of self and values. Jupiter aids in this process, but again, from a different stance.
- Pluto wasn't even discovered 90 years ago but has made a big name for himself. The Lord of the underworld rules none other than Scorpio, but it was Mars that was the traditional ruler.
This suited well because Mars is the God of War - our anger, drive, ambition, sex, and arguably, how we get revenge. Pluto is an extension of the Martian nature - it is all that was listed but on a deep, psychological level. Anger is actually resentment. Ambition is obsession. Sex is still sex, but on a soul level. Mars being the traditional / modern co-ruler still suits, but Pluto is a better placement as the current, main ruler which aids in this.
When looking at a natal chart, or any chart for that matter, taking into account the traditional rulers gives extra information, particularly if you are stuck on interpreting.
I myself have Saturn rising (aka conjunct the Ascendant) in Aquarius. Whilst this makes me Saturnian, it is not the classic Capricorn-type Saturnian, which would entail being very practical, grounded, organized, career focused. The Aquarian-type Saturnian is still disciplined and self-critical (as is anyone with Saturn rising, regardless of the sign it is occupying), but has a lot more concern with humanitarian issues, and wants to structure their view/how others view them around that. It also makes one aloof and quirky.
All in all it is best not to disregard any information that has been used for many moons, especially when it can give so much detail.
