Why Predictions are Dangerous
After writing up the other article on the sun sign analysis in newspapers, it got me thinking about how astrology is seen as a predictive tool by those who do not fully grasp the concept. Because of the wording in the "horoscopes" in the newspapers and magazines, those that read it for insight assume that is what to expect and is what will happen to them.
Astrology does sell because it has been marketed for so long to make predictions. While many professional astrologers who have been studying it for decades have made amazing, correct predictions (e.g. Donna Cunningham), it is still best not to view it as this because it just instills the thought of Life being 100% fate, therefore we can do whatever we want because it is fate.
The same thing can be said about not taking challenging placements in our natal chart and to act accordingly, just as I wrote about in Stop Blaming the Planets.
Astrologers are under strain because of clients wanting us to predict, although they are not the only ones who predict.
Doctors make predictions every day - they are asked how long the patient has to live, or how long the illness will occur for. This is a dangerous game to play because of how many people who will believe literally anything that they are told, particularly from a medical professional.
My best friend was told at the age of 20 that she will never have children, nor will she live past the age of 21. She told the doctor "watch me", and lived to the age of 60 whilst bearing 3 children (not to mention falling pregnant other times). Mind you, her 5 point Leo stellium conjunct her Ascendant gave her such a determined outlook, which worked in her favour.
It is this mentality that more people should adopt, as a lot of the time it is mind over matter, although there are extreme cases where of course the illness is unfortunately too severe.
The same prediction methods are used by economists, as they are asked when the next financial crash is occurring. Scientists are asked when and where the next natural disaster will occur. Even through rigorous testing, a lot of the time it doesn't happen.
Psychiatrists are asked to predict whether the patient's psychosis will recur.
It is interesting how even though these other people who predict are not looked down upon or even arrested for making predictions, yet astrologers are consistently asked to make predictions even if it goes against our morals and knowledge.
In saying this, looking at transits vary because you will get the themes of what to expect within a time frame, rather than an exact happening.
